We Thank All our Supporters, Volunteers, and HS Coaches

February, 2026

To Our Friends, Family, Supporters, Volunteers, and Coaches,

The Marshall Institute for Ethical Thought & Action (MIETA) is truly grateful to this community, this year's Ethics Bowls could not have been as successful, without your support and continuous dedication!

Since 2016, The Marshall Institute has hosted the Westchester County Regional High School Ethics Bowl. Every year since then, we promise to grow our community and provide tough competition for the Bowl event. The Inaugural Westchester Ethics Bowl hosted seven High Schools from the NY Tri-State area and Greater NY area, bringing together about 70 high school students. Since then, we have more than doubled the number of participating high schools, teams, and high school students.

This year marked a significant milestone: MIETA hosted two NY-Regional High School Ethics Bowls—The 11th Annual Westchester Ethics Bowl, and the NYC Regional High School Ethics Bowl.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Partners:

  • Sacred Heart Greenwich:  We are immensely grateful to Marian Campana and Dr. Kelly Connelly for their quick and seamless assistance in transitioning the Westchester Bowl from Manhattanville University to their beautiful Sacred Heart Greenwich campus.
  • Fordham University:  A special thank you to Dr. Lauren Kopajtic with the Fordham Philosophy Department at Rose Hill. Dr. Kopajtic’s support was vital in launching the 2026 NYC Bowl. Another thank you to the Fordham Center for Ethics, especially Megan Bogia, who agreed to host this year's NYC Regional competition. Thank you also to Lori Merone, who coordinated everything from reserving rooms to ordering coffee!
  • The Marc Sanders Foundation:  Our 2025 matching grant campaign, made possible through the Marc Sanders Foundation, allowed us to continue our work. Thank you Kori Hensell for your guidance and trust!

To the Coaches, your countless hours of preparation are reflected in the brilliance of your students. Across both Regionals, we welcomed over 300 High School Students from 30 High Schools.

As for our Volunteers, thank you, to all 90! Thank you for assisting the next generation of thinkers to seek truth through dialogue. Each of you imparted some wisdom to these competitors. These students are sometimes braver than us, their willingness to have these complex discussions provides hope in civil discourse. Thank you to all our Judges and Volunteers who help make the day's competition run smoothly.

Finally, this moment is for our team of Interns here at the MIETA. This success belongs to you, those that rolled-up their sleeves and tackled every challenge. To our Regional Coordinators, Lindsey Eyring (Westchester), and Katherine Hanavan (NYC), your leadership is inspiring. To Josh Steinschneider, Nicholas Burns, Connor Pellicciotti, Christopher Varuolo, Lauren Ndreu, Avery Kimberlin, Jake Hoina, and Matthew Bundy thank you for your tireless work and patience. We are proud of you!

We are all one team, with the same goal: Ethos. Always doing good, seeking truth, and building character. Thank you all, for being a vital part of this growing family!

With Gratitude,

Jesse Juarez

"Toward" Ethical Thought In Action

This year's pin is a compass, symbolizing the Ethics Bowl as a practice of moral orientation rather than the pursuit of easy or final answers. It reflects the idea that ethical reasoning requires courage to confront difficult questions, a commitment to truth through careful and honest inquiry, friendship grounded in respectful and collaborative dialogue, and humility in recognizing the limits of one's own understanding.

Together, these virtues capture the spirit of the Ethics Bowl as an exercise in thoughtful judgment, shared inquiry, and ethical reflection in action.

I recall countless moments in athletics where the losing children received participation trophies for their efforts. One memory that distinctly stands out to me was during a karate tournament I participated in. It had 30 competitors, and all 27 competitors who did not place in 1st, 2nd or 3rd, still received participation trophies.
