SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2026, The Marshall Institute for Ethical Thought and Action, in conjunction with the Marc Sanders Foundation, the Fordham Center for Ethics, and the Fordham University Department of Philosophy, hosted the inaugural Dr. Siobhan Nash-Marshall Regional NYC High School Ethics Bowl. The Ethics Bowl was held inside Keating Hall, at the magnificent Fordham University - Rose Hill campus in The Bronx. Fordham University holds a special place in the heart of MIETA, for our late founder, Siobhan Nash-Marshall once graced its halls.
The Ethics Bowl is a competition in which various high school teams come together to present their arguments on case sets containing various topics that are ethical and moral in nature. The competing teams were judged by a panel of judges on their ability to debate these issues in question. The 56 volunteers this year consisted of Fordham students, lawyers, professors, and religious and civic leaders, various professionals and many friends to help us keep the Bowl running smoothly. Our interns also helped the competition by judging and moderating.
This was the largest Ethics Bowl competition that MIETA has hosted. 17 high schools throughout NYC participated, some of which had more than one team, which meant more teams than schools. 162 high school students spread out over 26 teams.
The day started with the teams and volunteers arriving, followed by breakfast, provided by Daylight Donuts from New Hartford, NY, where everyone was getting to know each other, and just having a good time before the rounds began. Before the competition kicked off, morning announcements were given in the Keating 3rd floor auditorium from Ethics Bowl Director Jesse Juarez and Assistant Regional Coordinator Kate Hanavan. At the conclusion of those announcements, the 2026 NYC Ethics Bowl had officially begun!
Following three rounds of concurrent ethical debate, the teams, coaches, and volunteers had lunch, provided by Mr. Kold Kurts from Yonkers, NY, and mingled with each other. During the lunch break, the students voted for the team that would receive the Sr. Mary T. Clark Spirit of Ethics Award. After lunch, everyone returned to the auditorium for afternoon announcements. Kate Hanavan congratulated all the teams before announcing the four schools that would move on to the semi-finals. After that, the teams who made it to the semifinals were announced: The Geneva School of Manhattan, Gregorio Luperon High School for Science and Mathematics, Stuyvesant High School, and Trinity School.
The semi-final matches gave the remaining volunteers and students an extraordinary spectacle. The teams gave their best, but four teams soon became two. The finalists had been named. Trinity School would face Stuyvesant High School for the regional championship. After an exemplary debate in the Keating 1st floor auditorium, the victors had been named. Trinity School was named the Regional Champions of the NYC High School Ethics Bowl. Immediately after the final round, Kate Hanavan presented the awards: Gregorio Luperon High School was awarded the Sr. Mary T. Clark Spirit of Ethics Award; The Geneva School was presented with the Judges’ Best Award, which is given to the team with the most judge votes during the first three rounds.
The inaugural 2026 Dr. Siobhan Nash-Marshall NYC Regional High School Ethics Bowl was truly one that deserves to be remembered.
