SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2023, Manhattanville College and the Marshall Institute for Ethical Thought and Action hosted the 4th Annual Mary T. Clark R.S.C.J. – Intramural Ethics Bowl. This year’s event saw two teams of Interns from the Ethics Institute Internship program debate their peers in their very own Ethics Bowl. This year’s teams were captained by Mia MALDONADO, and Denisa DOCABECO. Along with their captains, we had: Nicholas ARYEE, Lindsey EYRING, Timothy FUDALE, Ketevan KARKASHADZE, Nicole KERZ, and Josh STEINSCHNEIDER. Although the first two rounds were close, it came down to the final and third round of the day to proclaim a winner!
The Intramural Bowl functions both as a way for newer interns to experience an Ethics Bowl before volunteering at the much larger Regional Bowl event for High Schools (JAN 27). It also serves as a “friendly exhibition” for local High Schools.
In the audience were Dover High School from PAWLING, NY, who asked the UG teams to clarify their arguments and positions. According to their coach, Julie Colacchio, Dover, “our students found everything so helpful in prepping for the Regional High School Ethics Bowl.”
There was an amazing Panel of Judges. Professors Siobhan NASH-MARSHALL, Mary T. Clark Chair of Christian Philosophy, and Matthew PAULEY, of the Political Science and Legal Studies Departments, were both on the panel that decided the overall winner. In the earlier rounds, we saw alumni band together as judges: Dillon ROBERTS (Class of 2023), Vanessa MARTINEZ (Class of 2022), and Jesse JUAREZ (Class of 2015).
Manhattanville College and the Marshall Institute for Ethical Thought & Action hope that the Mary T. Clark R.S.C.J. – Intramural Ethics Bowl becomes a staple not just for Manhattanville College students but for high schools, that benefit from collegiate dialogue. It is a wonderful place for students of all ages to engage in polarizing topics of discussion while remaining respect for the opinions of others, and above all their peers.
